About

Hi! I’m Jaime. I love all things thrifty, and I have a deep-seated addiction to Goodwill. Creating beauty and function from items that would otherwise be forgotten is my favorite thing to do. I am a mom of two teenage boys (15 and 19) and one tiny girl (18 months.) Her naptimes are spent obsessively reupholstering, sewing, and painting new life into old stuff. My boys are often pressed into service carrying the random furniture I bring home.

My mom raised me on garage sales, coupons, and clearance racks. During my tumultuous middle school years, she never balked at buying me the designer labels I craved. She only asked that I check out the sale items first. Once I realized how much more I could get when things were on sale, it didn’t take me long to gravitate toward the back of the store. Little did Mom know that she was creating a monster.

I first discovered our local thrift store, Last Chance, with my childhood best friend, Julia. She and I were (and still are) huge B-52’s fans. We’d get the weirdest, B-52’s inspired clothes we could find and parade around, reveling in strange looks we got from those around us.

For my bachelorette party, my friends Heather and Ellen took me to a B-52’s concert in Athens, GA. I’m in middle with a consignment store dress I covered in fake flowers.

Flash forward a few more tumultuous years. Ever the trendsetter, I was 16 and pregnant before “16 and Pregnant” was cool. Then I was 17, married, and poor as dirt. Thrift stores became more of a necessity. As I became more familiar with where I could get the best stuff, my wardrobe was full of designer labels once again. However, it wasn’t until after I became a single mom that my thrift store addiction really took hold.

Suddenly, I didn’t have to explain the odd pieces of outdated furniture for which I had a vision to anyone else but myself. My boys became accustomed to riding with the top down in my tiny convertible with coats on in the middle of winter so I could haul home my latest find. Now I am happily married to the best husband ever. Though he might roll his eyes at the occasional item, he gives me free rein to experiment.

Every week on Tuesdays, my tiny girl, my mom, and my 102-year-old grandma pack into my beat-up SUV and hit as many thrift stores as we can. Mom had her doubts about thrift stores a few years ago, but after going to a few nicer ones she’s almost as addicted as I am. Grama and baby come along for the ride. We are four generations of bargain-hunting women! Tuesday is my favorite day of the week!

My littlest one is already a seasoned thrift store shopper.

If I’m not thrift store shopping or working on a thrift store related project, I am skating! In addition to being Jaime, I am also Jumbo Shrimp — rookie Atlanta Rollergirl.

  1. What a great story and a fun legacy that’s being passed down for generations! My mom turned my sisters and me on to thrifting, too, and I’ll love her forever because of it. Any chance you’ll be sharing a photo of your B-52s inspired get-ups? 😉

    • Thank you so much for stopping by! Thrift is the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it? I’m so happy to have been born into it, just like you. No pictures remain of my younger B-52’s years, but just for you, I’ve added a recent one! Thanks again!
