Quiet Riot: A Roller Derby Quiet Book

I’ve had this idea in my head for a really long time, but I finally got around to making it. Undoubtedly because I live, eat, and breathe skating at the moment due to my Fresh Meat status. Also because I want to teach my little girl early that not all heroes are Disney princesses. This is my first attempt at a quiet book. I was inspired after seeing the amazing work of Julie Gillrie.  My book pales in comparison to her gorgeous hand-stitching and detail, but I had so much fun making it anyway. Without further ado…

First is the dress-up page. The skate bag unzips to reveal skates (my favorite part), two different outfits, and two helmet/hair combinations.

Next you can buckle the helmet and velcro on the mouthguard, then tie the skate laces.The sparkly part of the helmet came from an old dress which never fit me. The buckle portion is a dog collar which never fit my dog.

This is my favorite page, without a doubt! It took FOREVER, but it was so worth it. The dolls were made from some wooden clothespin things I bought at Hobby Lobby. They were too long, so I ended up having to saw a few inches from each of them. Then I painted on uniforms, referee shirts, smiles, and tiny little skates. I added some embroidery floss for hair. The helmets are little wood caps which also came from Hobby Lobby. I painted pivot stripes and jammer stars too. I attached some velcro to the feet of each doll so they could stand upright and move around the track.

These pages are a nod to the officials. The ref’s arms articulate so you can signal penalties, etc. Then you can time the skater’s penalty on the stopwatch.

“Cutting! Major!” I got one of those last night!
